Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Here are answers to some of the questions I commonly receive!

1. What version of Mah Jongg do you teach?

American Mah Jongg, the version played with the National Mah Jongg League card, popular for its social, community feel.

2. I've never played Mah Jongg before - will I be able to learn?

Absolutely! My beginner classes are designed for total newcomers. I break the game down step by step, and most students are playing a real hand by the end of the series. No experience needed - just bring your curiosity. :)

3. I have a little experience already - is a class still right for me?

Definitely. Whether you've read a book, taken a lesson, or own a set you haven't used much, there's a class for you. If you know the basics, you'll likely enjoy a Guided Play & Practice or Strategy session, where you'll build confidence at the table.

4. What's the difference between the beginner and more advanced classes?

The Beginner Series starts from the very beginning—the tiles, goal of the game, and how to play a hand start to finish. Guided Play & Practice and Strategy classes are for players who know the fundamentals & want to sharpen up: reading the card more fluently, strategy, defense, and more confident play.

5. Do I need to bring anything? Are tiles and cards provided?

Everything you need is provided in class - just bring yourself! If you'd like your own set or card to practice at home, I'm happy to point you in the right direction.

6. I'm out of town for one of the class dates - can I reschedule or join a later session?

The beginner series runs as a set of sessions, but if you can't make one of the dates, reach out and I'll do my best to slot you into a later session or work out an alternative.

7. Do you host private events?

Yes! I love bringing Mah Jongg to birthdays, meetings, corporate retreats, and gatherings of all kinds. I'll tailor the session to your group's experience level. For private events, I'm happy to come to you, or we can arrange another spot that works. Start a request on the Experiences page.

8. How many people do I need for a private event?

Private events work great for groups of 4-12. Reach out with your group size and I'll let you know what's possible.

9. Can you come to us? What areas do you travel to?

I'm based in the East Bay / San Francisco area and happily travel for private events & group classes. For groups farther out, I can usually make it work; there may be a fee to cover travel depending on distance.
